Tree Characteristics:
- A nut bearing tree of moderate size, reaching about 100ft in height.
 - The trunk is usually about 3ft in diameter, but can be more.
 
Characteristics of the wood:
- A rather coarse textured wood, with straight to wavy grain, typically grey brown with darker streaks, though the colour and markings can vary according to origin.
 - Italian walnut is generally considered the 
best for colour and figure. - Walnut is a reasonably tough wood, with moderate durability and good steam bending properties.
