Tree Characteristics:

  • A large tree, reaching 150ft in height and producing a long clear trunk around 5ft in diameter.

Characteristics of the wood:

  • A strong hard and heavy wood, with an even medium coarse texture.Usually straight grained, but can be wavy or interlocking
  • It has a narrow yellowish white sapwood and light to deep redbrown heartwood. The colour of unfinished wood, however, is likely to mellow to a lighter shade of brown.
  • The figure displays fine brown flecks with occasional gum veins. Sometimes the wood is decoratively marked by the fungus "Fistulina hepatica". It is naturally very durable.

Workability:

  • A moderately difficult wood to work with hand and machine tools, but turns very well. It glues satisfactorily.

Average dried weight:

  • 51lb/cuft.

Finishing:

  • It polishes very well and is particularly suited to an oil finish.
