Tree Characteristics:
- A small tree, botanically related to rosewood, that produces short logs or billets of wood not usually exceeding 8ft in length.
 - The diameter of the billets can be 3in to 8in with the sapwood removed.
 
Characteristics of the wood:
- A fine even textured, heavy, lustrous wood.
 - It has a white sapwood contrasting sharply with the dark heartwood.
 - It has an attractive variegated striped figure of violet brown, black and golden yellow.
 
Workability:
- The hard nature of the wood requires sharp tools, but otherwise it is relatively easy to work.
 - It glues satisfactorily.
 
Average dried weight:
- 75lb/cuft.
 
Finishing:
- It burnishes to a fine natural finish an polishes well with wax.
 
Common uses:
- Inlay.
 - Turnery.
