Tree Characteristics:

  • A tall, straight growing tree, it can reach 120ft in height and produces a long, clean, straght trunk up to 8ft in diameter.

Characteristics of the wood:

  • A fine even textured straight grained timber. The heartwood is reddish brown, turning to lighter shades of brown through to the pale yellow sapwood
  • It has a rather indistinct figure, with patches and streaks of browns and yellows blending together.
  • The wood will lighten in colour on exposure to light.

Workability:

  • Works well with hand and machine tools, its fine texture gives a good finish from the plane and can be brought to a smooth finish.
  • It glues satisfactorily.

Average dried weight:

  • 33lb/cuft.

Finishing:

  • Can be stained satisfactorily, and finishes well with paint or polish.

Common uses:

  • Furniture.
  • Turnery.
  • Panelling.
  • Decorative veneer.
  • Plywood.
