Tree Characteristics:
- A tall, straight growing tree, it can reach 120ft in height and produces a long, clean, straght trunk up to 8ft in diameter.
Characteristics of the wood:
- A fine even textured straight grained timber. The heartwood is reddish brown, turning to lighter shades of brown through to the pale yellow sapwood
- It has a rather indistinct figure, with patches and streaks of browns and yellows blending together.
- The wood will lighten in colour on exposure to light.
Workability:
- Works well with hand and machine tools, its fine texture gives a good finish from the plane and can be brought to a smooth finish.
- It glues satisfactorily.
Average dried weight:
- 33lb/cuft.
Finishing:
- Can be stained satisfactorily, and finishes well with paint or polish.
Common uses:
- Furniture.
- Turnery.
- Panelling.
- Decorative veneer.
- Plywood.
