Tree Characteristics:
- A tree of moderate size, reaching 100ft in height and producing a long straight trunk about 3ft 3in in diameter.
Characteristics of the wood:
- A moderately coarse even textured wood, the heartwood is red brown in colour, with red and purple veining.
- It is hard and heavy, with straight or interlocked and irregular grain.
- It is not resilient, but resonably strong and durable.
Workability:
- It works well with hand tools, and machines to a fine finish.
- Irregular grained wood can be difficult, and sharp cutting edges must be maintained.
- Gum pockets can give problems when gluing.
Average dried weight:
- 55lb/cuft.
Finishing:
- It stains well and polishes to a fine finish.
Common uses:
- Decorative veneer.
- Turnery.
- Woodware.
- Furniture.
