Tree Characteristics:
- A relatively small tree, producing a straight trunk up to 15ft in height and 2ft 6in in diameter.
 
Characteristics of the wood:
- A hard dense and heavy wood, with a fine even texture and straight, irregular or wavy grain.
 - The sapwood is yellowish white, the heartwood a lustrous dark brown to black.
 - The heartwood is naturally durable.
 
Workability:
- A difficult wood to work by hand or machine, it chips easily and quickly dulls the tools .
 - It can be machined well on a lathe and brought to a fine finish.
 - It does not glue well.
 
Average dried weight:
- 74lb/cuft.
 
Finishing:
- It can be polished to an excellent finish.
 
Common uses:
- Turnery.
 - Musical instruments.
 - Cutlery handles.
