Tree Characteristics:

  • The tree reaches a height of around 120ft and produces a straight trunk up to 4ft in diameter.

Characteristics of the wood:

  • A coarse even textured wood, usually straight grained with large rays giving an attractive ray figure.
  • It is reddish brown in colour, similar to American red oak, the wood has only moderate strength, but is good for steam bending
  • It is moderately durable for exterior use.

Workability:

  • It works well with hand and machine tools, but the ray cells can tear when planing.
  • It glues satisfactorily.

Average dried weight:

  • 34lb/cuft.

Finishing:

  • It stains well and polishes satisfactorily.

Common uses:

  • Furniture.
  • Interior joinery.
  • Flooring.
  • Building construction.
  • Veneer.
