Hoop Pine:

  • Queensland pine (though not a true pine).

Sources:

  • Australia.
  • Papua New Guinea.

Tree Characteristics:

  • A tall elegant tree, with tufts of foliage at the tips of its thin branches.
  • The average height is about 100ft, with a trunk diameter of about 3ft 3in.

Characteristics of the wood:

  • A straight grained fine textured wood. Similar to Parana in appearance, it has wide light brown heartwood
  • It is not durable.

Workability:

  • Works well with hand and machine tools, but requires a keen cutting edge to avoid tearing the grain around the knots.
  • It glues well.

Average dried weight:

  • 35lb/cuft.

Finishing:

  • Takes paint well and can be polished to a fine attractive finish.

Common uses:

  • Furniture.
  • Turnery.
  • Pattern making.
  • Building construction.
  • Plywood.
  • Joinery.
