Tree Characteristics:
- A small to medium size tree, producing short lengths or billets not more than 8in in diameter.
 
Characteristics of the wood:
- Hard and heavy, generally with straight grain and fine even texture.
 - It has pale sapwood, contrasting with the lustrous bright orange red heartwood which turns to a rich red brown on exposure.
 - It is tough, resilient and very durable.
 
Workability:
- The wood works reasonably well with hand and machine tools, but requires regular maintenance of cutting edges.
 - It gules well.
 
Average dried weight:
- 80lb/cuft.
 
Finishing:
- It is naturally lustrous and polishes to a beautiful fine finish.
 
Common uses:
- Dyewood.
 - Turnery.
 - Violin bows.
 - Gun stocks.
 - Parquet flooring.
